South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff has accused the North Korean military of launching between 90 and 200 artillery shells into the Yellow Sea and another 90 into the waters of the Sea of Japan, known in Korea as the East Sea.
According to the South Korean authorities, the projectiles have fallen in the buffer zones to the east and west of the North Border Line, the name by which the maritime border between the two countries is known.
Thus, the Joint Chiefs of Staff has remarked that none of the projectiles have fallen on South Korean maritime territory, although it has repeatedly warned Pyongyang that it would be breaching the Comprehensive Military Agreement and has called for an end to the provocations.
In a statement addressed to the press, the Joint Chiefs of Staff has stressed that these latest gestures by North Korea do nothing but undermine peace and stability both on the Korean peninsula and internationally, according to the South Korean news agency. Yonhap.
These launches come less than a day after 10 North Korean military warplanes flew over near the border and Pyongyang later fired a short-range ballistic missile.
