It was just a matter of time. At a time when physical formats for multimedia content or games are becoming increasingly scarce, the developer of the Blu-Ray format has decided to begin the end of production of this type of media for the domestic market.
Sony has confirmed The company will stop the development and production of optical media, planning to lay off 250 people from the factory where they were manufactured until now. The company has also assured that it will not open new plants, although the date of the total halt of domestic production is still unknown.
Companies and professionals will still have the possibility of obtaining Blu-Ray discs, since The Japanese company will manufacture them on request for professional sectors, including film and video game distributors.
Companies like Samsung stopped making Blu-Ray players more than 5 years ago, but today we could say that Sony and Microsoft consoles are still giving this format a push. The fact that movies will continue to be released in this format means that it still has some future, but it seems that everything is trending towards downloadable digital content and streaming.
Without a doubt, bad times for physical formats.
