Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has announced that it has surpassed the barrier of 25 million PlayStation 5 (PS5) consoles sold worldwide since its launch, which took place in November 2020.
The company has made known this and other data during the presentation of the financial results corresponding to the second quarter of the year (Q2 2022) of the current fiscal year, which began in April 2022 and will end in March next year.
In this last analyzed periodspecifically, the Japanese manufacturer has managed to sell 3.3 million units of its latest generation console, the same amount recorded in the same period of the previous year.
Taking into account the data reported during the first quarter of the year 2022, when 2.4 million PS5s were sold (compared to 2.3 million units corresponding to the same quarter of 2021), sales have been higher than those of 2021 so far this year.
Despite these good results, if this situation continued, Sony would not be able to fulfill its plans at the end of the 2022 fiscal year, since its objective was to sell 18 million PS5s and, for the moment, it has only sold 5.7 million consoles.
The sum of all the sales records of its latest generation console determines that Sony has achieved sell 25 million units since the launch of this product for ‘gamers’.
The results are also favorable As for the sales of ‘hardware’, which resulted in 179,245 million yen (about 1,200 million euros) of profit in the second quarter of the current fiscal year, compared to 160,635 million lenes (about 1,100 million euros) from the previous year.
Revenue from video game and software sales also increased from 343.03 million yen in Q2 2020 to 369,977 million yen in the second quarter of the current fiscal year.
In relation to the movements registered in the ‘software’ section, Sony has indicated that gamers bought a total of 62.5 million games on all available platforms. Of these, 63 percent were downloads in digital format and 6.7 million ‘first-party’ titles, that is, developed by their own studios.
