Following the success of the PlayStation 4, Sony’s gaming business has been on shaky ground and some of its executives have expressed their displeasure with what is happening to the gaming brand. One of the harshest has been Hiroki Totoki, who replaced Jim Ryan after his departure and during a period of interim and who has now gone all out with PlayStation.
Hiroki Totoki criticizes Sony and drags PlayStation for what he considers to be few original franchises
During an interview with Financial Times (via PlayStation Lifestyle) Hiroki Totoki, current CFO of Sony, lashed out at PlayStation, this time for the situation that, from his perspective, the company is going through with its original franchises. In this regard, the Japanese executive pointed out that PlayStation does not have as many IPs as it used to in previous generations, although he also extended this to other sectors: “whether it’s for games, movies or anime, we don’t have as much intellectual property as we have been promoting since the beginning. We need to work more in the initial phase of creating or obtaining intellectual property and that’s a problem for us.”
This is not the first time Hiroki Totoki has taken aim at PlayStation. He was one of the first executives to point out that PS5 sales were below expectations and the need to change strategy. Also, during his brief period at the head of Sony’s video game business, he publicly exposed Bungie, pointing out that the company was Destiny has poor financial management and its development processes, warning that they must improve immediately.
Hiroki Totoki’s statements coincide, for better and for worse, with a moment of light and shade for PlayStation because of its recent game as a service, Concordbecame the biggest failure of the year, lasting only 11 days on the market due to the poor reception it received from players.
However, this has led the community to consider the return of franchises that belong to Sony such as Socom, Killzone, Sly CooperAt the same time, hope for the rise of a new Sony IP now lies with the upcoming release of Astro Bot which could well be the company’s mascot in the present or future.
