Someone tried to cheat on a university exam with a hidden camera and AI: now they are in prison (and without passing)

Student Trap

A student identified with the initials MEE was caught cheating on a university exam in Türkiye. The man, who according to authorities used a device connected to the Internet with artificial intelligence (IA) to resolve the questions, you have been arrested and are expected to be tried for the incident. Additionally, he has been hit with an educational disciplinary measure that will last at least two years.

According to local media haberler.com, MEE was presented on June 8 in a Basic Aptitude Test (TYT) in the city of Isparta. This is a mandatory evaluation for entry to higher education. ÖSYM, the institution in charge of organizing the activity, allows candidates to enter the room only with a transparent water bottle. And, to guarantee this, it usually monitors buildings with cameras.

One of the students, according to the investigation, began to show some suspicious attitude after returning from the bathroom. The person responsible for this particular evaluation became aware of the situation and asked him to leave the room. Isparta Police officers immediately intervened and discovered that MEE had several electronic devices hidden in his clothing.

Authorities say the suspect managed to bypass entry controls by equipping himself with cheating devices in the bathroom. Specifically, they refer to a camera button on his shirt, a modem in one of his shoes and a headset. The mechanics, apparently, were for the camera to capture the questions and an AI to whisper the answer into your ear, but this wouldn’t have worked.

The items seized from the suspect

We don’t know what AI solution the student would have used, but authorities say one of the reasons MEE “panicked” was that the system it had devised to pass the exam it didn’t work properly. Another person, identified with the initials AB, had also been considered a suspect and had even been arrested, but was released after interrogation.

We already know what Apple pays OpenAI for using ChatGPT: zero euro units

In any case, MEE looks like it will bear the brunt. It is not clear if he will ultimately receive a sentence that he will have to serve in prison, but he will remain deprived of freedom until the trial. As if this were not enough, the man has been banned from TYT tests for two years. This means that during that period of time he will not be able to repeat the test in which he was caught cheating and any other.
