Imagine a future where humanoid robots are almost everywhere. In the factories they are in charge of the monotonous tasksin public spaces they are security guards, and in the houses they do everything that their owners prefer to delegate, such as mowing the lawn, cooking and cleaning.
That utopian scenario could come true, but everything seems to indicate that we will have to wait for technology to continue evolving. The work of Sanctuary AI, however, seems to point in that direction. The Canadian company has built a robot capable of doing everyday tasks.
The robot that could accompany us at home
Although robotics has advanced by leaps and bounds in recent years, our robotic friends are still a long way from doing the things we they do in the movies. That they walk by our side, accompany us and do some of the tasks that we do still need time.
But little by little, we are making progress. Initially, Boston Dynamics’ robots had little agility and now do somersaults. Sanctuary AI, for its part, is directing its efforts to improve the performance of tasks that involve multiple skills.
The company is developing a “general purpose robot” that will combine artificial intelligence with advanced hardware. At the moment they have demonstrated part of their progress with a series of videos that show their robot doing tasks such as cooking, setting the table, washing up and cleaning a desk with a computer But, as we say, it has a trick.
At the moment, the robot does not work autonomously, but rather there is an operator who is in charge of controlling each of its movements. In any case, this advance should not be underestimated since the ability to manipulate objects remotely through sensors and different mechanisms is an important achievement.
Certainly, Sanctuary AI still needs to do a great job of improving the speed and precision of the movements of your remote controlled robot. The company assures that it will achieve this and that it will even go a step further by launching its “cognitive platform”, a combination of hardware and software powered by AI.
“It will mimic subsystems found in the human brain, such as memory, vision, hearing, and touch. When this software is applied to a general purpose system (as opposed to a single purpose system), there will be opportunities to take on almost any human task. Solving deep-rooted safety and labor shortage issues is just the tip of the iceberg.”
The promise of this company’s future systems is enormous, and only time will tell if they actually achieve those goals. Of course, it should be noted that not only Sanctuary AI has ambitious ideas. Elon Musk has said that Optimus, Tesla’s robot, “has the potential to be more important than the car business over time.”
