Some 16,000 people have arrived in Egypt from Sudanese territory after the outbreak of fighting between the Sudanese Army and paramilitaries almost two weeks ago, according to a spokesman for the Egyptian Foreign Ministry, which for the first time on Thursday offered an estimate of the refugees.
Of these 16,000 people, more than 14,000 would have Sudanese nationality, while the remaining 2,000 correspond to citizens of fifty countries and six international organizations, reports the newspaper ‘Al Ahram’.
The United Nations has also confirmed that more than 20,000 people have arrived in Chad, which shares a 1,400-kilometer border with Sudan, while there have also been crossings into South Sudan, specifically almost 4,000 South Sudanese who have returned to their country. originally.
The UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) estimates that, if the current trend persists, there could be more than 200,000 crossings into Chad and South Sudan. Today, the violence is concentrated in certain areas, such as the capital, Khartoum, and the Darfur region.
