The Somali government reported this Saturday that the Army has killed 3,000 militants from the jihadist group Al Shabaab in the last six months.
“The Federal Government of Somalia, led by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, wishes to announce that more than 3,000 Al Shabaab Kharijites (heretics) have been killed and another 3,700 have been injured since the start of military operations against the group led by the government.” , has published the Somali Ministry of Information in a statement.
In this period, 70 towns have been “liberated from the hands of the Kharijites with the support of the population,” he stressed, a preliminary step for the imminent “second phase” of the military offensive.
“The terrorist group Al Shabaab continues to suffer defeats on fronts across the country and the Federal Government is already preparing a major security offensive in the capital, Mogadishu, to ensure that fugitive terrorists do not harm the city or its civilians in retaliation,” he added.
The Somali government has reiterated its “commitment” so that the military offensive “strictly complies with its obligations under International Humanitarian Law, Human Rights, Islamic law and the rules of war.”
