The Foreign Minister of Somalia, Ahmed Moalim Fiqi, led this Saturday as guest of honor the “historic” launch of the UN Transition Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNTMIS), marking the beginning of the transition from the previous United Nations mission for the country, UNSOM, to UNTMIS.
“This transition reflects the resilience and achievements of the Somali people, from progress on debt relief to lifting the arms embargo, accession to the East African Community and our next term on the United Nations Security Council. “, Foreign Affairs expressed in a statement in which it thanked “the efforts of UNSOM” and “the invaluable support of donor countries.”
The event was attended by the Minister of the Interior and the Minister of Information, Ali Yusuf Hosh and Daud Aweys, respectively; Acting Special Representative of the UN Secretary General James Swan; the senior advisor, Yussuf Garad, and dignitaries and ambassadors from several countries, whom Fiqi has asked to continue collaborating “to strengthen Somali institutions” for a “peaceful and self-reliant future.”
This event comes after the Somali Government formally demanded in May that the United Nations end the mandate of UNSOM, deployed in the country for more than a decade, after “a thorough examination of strategic priorities”, in full withdrawal. of troops deployed by the African Union (AU).
UNSOM, deployed in Somalia in 2013, replaced the UN Political Office for Somalia (UNPOS), whose mandate began in 1995. Somalia has increased offensives against Al Shabaab in recent months with the support of clans and local militias as part of a series of decisions taken by the president, Hasan Sheikh Mohamud, who promised upon taking office to put the fight against terrorism at the center of his efforts to stabilize the African country.
