Somalia claims to have seized Al Shabaab's last stronghold in the Middle Shabelle region

Dec. 22 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Somali authorities have assured this Thursday that Al Shabaab has lost its last stronghold in the Middle Shabelle region (center), amid the reinforcement of operations against the terrorist group in recent months.

The spokesman for the Somali Army, Abdulahi Ali Anod, has indicated that government troops “have taken full control of the Runirgod district”, before adding that “the forces are chasing the terrorists and carrying out a cleansing operation in the location”.

Thus, he has emphasized that the terrorists have suffered “great losses” during the operation and has estimated the dead terrorists at 150, including five of foreign nationality, as reported by the Somali state news agency, SONNA.

Somalia has increased offensives against Al Shabaab in recent months with the support of clans and local militias as part of a series of decisions taken by the president, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, who promised upon taking office to put the fight against terrorism at the center of his efforts to stabilize the African country.
