The Somali authorities announced this Tuesday the death of nearly 60 alleged members of Al Shabaab in operations carried out in the states of Galmudug and Hirshabelle against the group, linked to the terrorist organization Al Qaeda.

The Somali Ministry of Information has specified in a statement published through its account on the social network Facebook that “the Armed Forces have once again inflicted a severe defeat” on Al Shabaab and has detailed the number of suspects killed in the operations at 59. .

Thus, he highlighted that they have been carried out with the help of local militias and “international friends”, without further details on the matter. The Ministry has stressed that 32 suspected militants have died in Garilay, in Galmudug, while another 27 “conspirators” have died in Yaaqle, in Hirshabelle.

Somalia has increased offensives against Al Shabaab in recent months with the support of local clans and militias as part of a series of decisions taken by the president, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, who promised upon taking office in May 2022 to put the fight against terrorism in the center of their efforts to stabilize the African country.
