Somali Army Kills 17 Suspected Al Shabaab Members

July 13 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Somali Army has killed 17 suspected members of the terrorist group Al Shabaab this Wednesday afternoon in a joint operation with regional militias near the town of Welmaro, in the south of the country.

The “neutralized” individuals were allegedly part of a suicide group and most of them were foreigners, the Somali Armed Forces have confirmed to the SONNA news agency.

During the day on Tuesday, the Army announced the death of 50 alleged members of Al Shabaab, including several senior officials, in the framework of an operation carried out in the Lower Juba region (south) together with local militias.

Likewise, the Somali Army captured several presumed members of the jihadist group, linked to Al Qaeda, while seizing weapons and vehicles, just a few days after a series of bombardments in this region that also left dozens dead among the ranks of Al Shabaab.

Somalia has increased offensives against Al Shabaab in recent months with the support of clans and local militias as part of a series of decisions taken by the president, Hasan Sheikh Mohamud, who promised upon taking office to put the fight against terrorism at the center of his efforts to stabilize the African country.
