Social Security gains almost 502,000 affiliates in 2024, up to 21.33 million employed

Foreigners achieved four out of every ten new jobs, and health, hospitality and commerce were the main drivers of employment

Social Security gained 501,952 affiliates in 2024, 2.4% more than in 2023, ending the year with 21,337,962 employees, the highest number in its history at the end of the month of December, as reported this Friday by the Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration.

This increase in average employment is the third largest annual increase since 2018, when the system added 564,000 workers, only surpassed by that of 2021 (+776,478 affiliates after the end of pandemic restrictions) and by that of 2023, the year in which that employment rose by almost 540,000 people.

In this way, 2024 is the fourth consecutive year in which employment grows after 2020, the first year of the pandemic, took away 360,105 jobs.

The 21.33 million average employed people with whom the system closed 2024 was reached after Social Security added 35,500 average affiliates in December (+0.17%), its largest increase in this month since 2018 if December is discounted of 2021, a year marked by Covid.

As highlighted by the Department headed by Elma Saiz, in the last four years almost 2.3 million members have joined Social Security.

In seasonally adjusted terms, the number of contributors increased in December by 42,700 workers (+0.2%), closing the year at a historical maximum of 21,344,487 employees, which represents 501,551 more affiliates than in 2023.

The Ministry has also highlighted that, compared to large European countries, job creation in Spain since the end of 2021, before the labor reform came into force, has grown by 8.1%, above what It has done so in Italy (+5.5%), France (+2.3%) and Germany (+1.7%).

FEMALE EMPLOYMENT ENDS THE YEAR EXCEEDING THE 10 MILLION MARKET

Of the almost 502,000 average affiliates that Social Security added in 2024, just over half, 50.4%, were women and four out of ten were foreigners.

Specifically, the average female employment grew in 2024 by 252,944 affiliates (+2.5%) and ended the year at 10,109,202 contributing women, its highest level at an annual close in the entire historical series. Male affiliation, for its part, increased on average by 249,008 employees (+2.2%), totaling 11,228,761 workers.

Female employment has accumulated growth of 10.8% since the year before the labor reform, a percentage 2.9 points higher than that registered among men.

The Ministry has also reported that youth employment also shows “above average dynamism”, with an increase of 20.5% since 2021, more than double the average.

For its part, the average affiliation of foreigners increased by 212,042 contributors in 2024, 7.9% compared to 2023, reaching 2,880,818 employed persons, a new maximum at the end of a year. In the last decade, the employment of foreigners has grown faster than that of nationals, currently accounting for 13.5% of total affiliates.

RECORD OF AFFILIATE SELF-EMPLOYED PEOPLE AT THE END OF THE YEAR

The General Regime, the largest in the system, gained 460,134 average affiliates last year (+2.6%), for a total of 17.89 million employed people.

For its part, the Special Regime for Self-Employed Workers (RETA) added 42,396 new contributors in the year (+1.3%) and ended 2024 with 3,386,765 employed people, its highest level in history at the end of the year,” thanks to the pull of sectors with high added value”, according to the Ministry.

In fact, in the last year, information and communications and professional, scientific and technical activities have incorporated 21,553 self-employed workers.

The Sea Regime, for its part, registered 576 casualties in the year (-1%) and the Coal Regime lost 3 affiliates compared to 2023 (-0.3%).

HEALTH, HOSPITALITY AND TRADE, MAIN DRIVERS OF EMPLOYMENT

Within the General Regime, healthcare activities led the increase in employment in 2024 in absolute terms after gaining 61,170 new contributors compared to 2023 (+3.3%) in average values.

Also notable were the absolute increases in average affiliates in hospitality, with 54,398 more employees (+4%), and in commerce, which added 53,380 contributors in the year (+2%). On the decline side, only household activities as employers of domestic staff recorded a loss of contributors, with 1,266 withdrawals (-3.3%).

In relative values, the largest annual increases in average affiliation occurred in agriculture (+6.2%) and transportation and storage, whose number of employed persons increased by 5.5% compared to 2023.

For its part, the Special Agrarian System registered 25 losses last year, while the Special Home System lost 18,159 affiliates compared to 2023 (-4.9%).

The Ministry has highlighted that the growth in membership in 2024 was concentrated above all in sectors with high added value, such as information and telecommunications and professional, scientific and technical activities, where employment has increased by 75,000 people and shows percentage increases in the area around the 4%, compared to 2.7% of the national average.

ABOUT 14.7 MILLION EMPLOYED EMPLOYEES WITH FIXED CONTRACTS

According to the Ministry, Social Security has almost 3.7 million more members with permanent contracts since the entry into force of the labor reform.

In total, the system has nearly 14.7 million members with permanent contracts, of which more than 9.7 million work full time.

The Ministry has highlighted that “the dynamism of the labor market and the increase in the quality of employment” is contributing to strengthening the sustainability of the pension system. The contributor-per-pensioner ratio stands at 2.44, “levels that guarantee the sustainability of the pension system,” highlights the Department headed by Elma Saiz.

ALL COMMUNITIES GAIN CONTRIBUTORS IN 2024

All the autonomous communities gained 2024 average members compared to 2023.

In relative values, the increases in employment in the Canary Islands, the Balearic Islands and Madrid stand out, the only regions with annual increases of more than 3%.

In absolute terms, Madrid led the rebound in employment in 2024, with 114,779 new affiliates, followed by Andalusia (+93,770 contributors); Catalonia (+81,016 affiliates) and Valencian Community (+50,446).

Regarding this last community, the Ministry emphasizes that the affiliation data does not show an impact on employment in the areas most affected by the DANA at the end of October. Thus, membership in the province of Valencia grew in December by 6,427 employed persons in monthly terms and by 28,393 contributors in annual terms, up to a total of 1,176,453 members.

On the other hand, the Ministry has reported that workers in temporary employment regulation files (ERTE) stood at 19,220 at the end of the year, of which 11,259 were in an ERTE due to force majeure and 7,961 in an ERTE for economic reasons. , technical, organizational or production (ETOP).
