The Prime Minister of Slovenia, Robert Golob, announced this Monday that he will propose the recognition of Palestine as a state to the Council of Ministers next Thursday.
The proposal, once approved by the Council of Ministers, will be sent to the National Assembly for voting, which could take place on June 4, according to the Slovenian newspaper ‘Dnevnik’.
“After a series of consultations in recent days, I have decided to include the resolution of recognition of Palestine in the meeting of the Council of Ministers on Thursday,” Golob said during his official visit to Algeria.
The Slovenian official stressed that Slovenia “is a responsible member of the UN Security Council and is obliged to do everything in its power to achieve lasting peace in the Middle East,” he argued.
This same Monday, the Slovenian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Tanja Fajon, announced that she will recommend to the Government to complete the procedure for the recognition of Palestine this week to later refer the issue to the National Assembly in order to complete the recognition process. formal “as soon as possible.”
The process began formally on May 9 with the intention of taking the vote to parliament before June 13, according to the Slovenian Government, which thus joins Spain, Ireland and Norway that have also initiated the recognition of Palestine as a state.
