Slovakia's president threatens Ukraine with countermeasures if it does not lift the cut on Russian oil

Jul 24. () –

Slovakia’s President Peter Pellegrini on Wednesday threatened Ukraine with countermeasures if it does not lift a ban on Russian oil supplies from Lukoil, which has been sanctioned by kyiv, via the Druzhba pipeline.

“What Ukraine has done in relation to Slovakia is a very, very serious matter,” Pellegrini stressed, adding that he hopes kyiv will resolve the issue “as soon as possible”, without specifying what measures would be taken in this regard.

Slovakia argues that kyiv has violated the association agreement with the European Union, as the country has an exemption for importing Russian oil until the end of the year and prohibits disruption of energy transit.

Both Hungary and Slovakia urged the European Commission to act on Monday because “the interruption of shipments by Lukoil, which provides a significant part of Hungarian and Slovak oil imports, threatens energy supplies.”
