Six people killed in new attacks by a group linked to Islamic State in the DRC

September 22 (EUROPA PRESS) –

At least six people have been killed in a double attack by suspected members of the Islamic State-linked Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) group on a town in North Kivu province in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The head of the Bapere sector, Macaire Sivikunula, told Radio Okapi on Sunday that the attacks were carried out on Friday and Saturday against Bandulu and Midele, killing four and two people respectively.

He also stressed that the attackers set fire to several houses in Midede, while pointing out that the Congolese army has already launched a search and capture operation for the attackers in the area, with no claim of responsibility for these attacks yet.

The ADF, a Ugandan group created in the 1990s that was particularly active in eastern DRC and blamed for the massacre of hundreds of civilians in this part of the country, suffered a split in 2019 after its leader swore allegiance to the jihadist group Islamic State in Central Africa (ISCA), under whose flag it has been operating ever since.
