Sindh, a province suffocated by floods

Sindh, a province suffocated by floods

First modification:

The southern province of Sindh is one of the worst affected by floods in Pakistan since June. The cause, the exceptional monsoon rains and the overflow of the rivers after the accelerated melting of the glaciers in the north of the country. One in seven people is affected and 6.4 million need urgent humanitarian assistance. More than 1,300 people have died according to the latest official balance, which could increase as aid efforts reach the affected areas.

For our special envoy in Sindh province, Sonia Ghezali

In Dadu, one of the districts in Sindh province, the authorities have asked thousands of people to evacuate their homes. The water continues to rise day after day in some areas of the district. This is the case of KN Shah and its suburbs. The Indus highway that runs through the district is under water. Traffic signs are overhead, but hundreds of houses are submerged. There are three meters of water in several areas. Only the fronts of multi-storey buildings are visible, such as those of some schools and institutes. Gas pump badges are also visible.

fear of scorpions

In the heart of the city of KN Shah, rescuers from the Pakistan Edhi Foundation have helped 1,200 people in the last five days. They have been sailing the waters since early in the morning, going to submerged villages, rescuing those who are trapped and bringing water to those who do not want to leave their homes. The latter refuse to evacuate because they fear their homes will be looted if they leave. Many men have sent their wives and children to stay with relatives in non-flooded areas, or to emergency camps, but they have stayed. In KN Shah, there are said to be about 200 men who refuse to leave their homes. They live on the roofs despite the risk of collapse, since all the houses are flooded up to a height of three meters.

The streets, which have become a river, are full of garbage and snakes have appeared. Scorpions, of which there are many in Sindh, are even more feared, as these people have no way of getting to a hospital in an emergency. There is no access to clean water, no food, no electricity, the mobile phone network is down, and people are cut off from the world. The only way to get supplies is to use the boats of the lifeguards or fishermen, who charge for the journey to the mainland.

The weather forecast is for more rain

At the moment, there are fears of further flooding in Lake Manchar, located 80 km from Dadu province. It is a lake used for water storage, but now it is overflowing. These gates are under great pressure and thousands of homes are in danger. The authorities have opened a gap that allows water to flow into some of the villages that will be flooded, but this should allow the highly populated districts of Dadu and Sewan to be spared. It will be enough? Some people wonder if rainwater from the neighboring mountains of Baluchistan will reach Lake Manchar and swell it even more, as it is already overflowing. And this despite the fact that the weather forecasts announce rain for the next few days.
