Side event: “Regional challenges in progress towards sustainable cities: causes and evidence”

The Human Settlements Unit of the Sustainable Development and Human Settlements Division of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) organizes the side event “Regional challenges in progress towards sustainable cities: causes and evidence”, during the Forum on the Countries of Latin America and the Caribbean on Sustainable Development 2023.

This event will have as its main objective to analyze and discuss the regional challenges that arise in the progress towards sustainable cities, with a particular focus on the causes and evidence behind these challenges. The objective is to offer a space for dialogue and reflection in which criteria can be exchanged on the insufficiencies detected and the causes of the environmental, economic and social deficits present in the growth of cities in Latin America and the Caribbean. Likewise, highlight the need to adopt actions promoted by the State that contribute to the structural transformation of the current patterns of urban development.

Among the topics that will be addressed at the event are the monitoring of the Sustainable Development Goals at the local level, culture and education as variables of sustainable development, urban resilience to disasters, among other topics related to urban planning. Experts and representatives of international organizations, national governments, academia and civil society organizations will participate.

The Sixth Meeting of the Forum of the Countries of Latin America and the Caribbean on Sustainable Development will be held at the ECLAC headquarters in Santiago, from April 26 to 28, 2023, under the Presidency of Argentina.
