Side event at CBD COP16: Capacity development tools for transversal action in the implementation of the MMB-KM in Latin America and the Caribbean

Friday, October 25, 10:10-11:30 am (GMT-5), Sala Cano Cristales – CEE, Cali, Colombia

Background

To raise awareness about the role of biodiversity in the transition towards a more sustainable development model, ECLAC has developed a multidimensional perspective considering regional priorities, challenges, opportunities and good practices related to the biodiversity of Latin America and the Caribbean. In a complementary manner, after a series of regional dialogues of high-level experts to reflect on how to advance the goals of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (MMB-KM) in the region, and in conjunction with the Support project the European Union to the Post-2020 Biodiversity Framework, ECLAC has developed a digital toolbox that seeks to provide selected resources on Goals 1 (territorial planning), 8 (climate change), 10 (sustainable agriculture), 14 (transectoral integration ) and 18 (harmful and positive incentives), which can serve to level the playing field so that public and private actors from different sectors contribute to improving national and subnational and productive policy design processes.
From an action-oriented perspective, this event will provide a space to share perspectives from diverse groups of regional actors on biodiversity and socioeconomic development, as well as current work to develop regional capacities for the implementation of the Biodiversity Plan and the MMB-KM. It will also serve to present the main findings, lessons learned and recommendations of the high-level experts who participated in the policy dialogues and the toolkit development process.

Goals

  • Present the ECLAC biodiversity integration toolbox for capacity development and knowledge management, in order to support the early implementation of the MMB-KM in Latin America and the Caribbean and reflect on ways to improve and enrich the exchange of resources, knowledge and capacities in all sectors, to act proactively, equitably and in supportive partnership with the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity, policies and regional development.

  • Make visible the contribution of biodiversity integration processes in the productive, economic and financial sectors to allow transformative changes through the dissemination of tools, good practices and innovative approaches that can contribute to the construction of a positive regional vision of development for biodiversity, which considers the relevant role of different agents of change such as subnational governments, indigenous peoples and local communities, youth, women, the private sector, among others.

  • Increase knowledge and exchange of experiences on the challenges and opportunities faced by the development of regional capacities—from local to regional—in the integration of the Biodiversity Plan and the objectives of other multilateral agreements.

  • Contribute to the dissemination of good practices within the region, with a perspective that reinforces the political will and commitment of governments and multiple actors to carry out transformative changes in current development models.
