SHELBY TOWNSHIP — Shelby Township SummerFest features tons of fun activities for the whole family to enjoy June 28-29 at the Shelby Township Municipal Campus.

On June 28, attendees were treated to a kids’ zone with a truck touch-and-go area, face painting, a petting zoo and a live taping of Shelby TV’s award-winning show “The Treehouse.” The day concluded with an outdoor family movie screening.

Shelby Township Supervisor Rick Stathakis said he asked Community Relations Director Brad Bates last year to work with his team at the Community Relations Department to save the township’s Independence Day celebration. The township reportedly lost its ability to hold its fireworks show because it didn’t have a large enough and accessible area to light them. Summerfest combined two previous events — the Shelby Township Summer Kickoff and the Shelby Township Downtown Development Authority’s Independence Day Celebration — into one two-day event.

“What Brad and his team put together with Treehouse Live, the Macomb Symphony Orchestra and a drone show was incredible. We have the best Community Relations Department in the country and they show it every day. I’m glad to see that such a large crowd on our campus was able to see it for themselves (June 28-29),” she said.

On June 29, the event included a live performance by the Macomb Symphony Orchestra and a grand finale drone show.

Both days also featured food trucks and a craft beer tent from Connect Macomb.

Bates said SummerFest would not have been possible without the support of all town employees, specifically mentioning the support of the Shelby Town Board of Trustees, Connect Macomb, the Macomb Symphony Orchestra and the Shelby Town DDA.

“With the support of Trustee Lucia Di Cicco and the DDA, we are providing Shelby Township with an unforgettable experience,” she said.
