Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, president of the United Arab Emirates, has named his eldest son, Khaled, crown prince of Abu Dhabi on Wednesday, being the next in line to occupy the position, as reported by the news agency WAM. .
The former president of the United Arab Emirates Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan died in May 2022 at the age of 73 following health complications after suffering a stroke in 2014 that led him to assume, from that moment on, a lower profile in the state affairs.
Because of this, he handed over his executive powers -although he kept the ceremonial ones- to his half-brother Mohamed, who first became the ‘de facto’ leader and later the president after his death, to this day. Khaled bin Mohamed Al Nahyan, the already appointed successor to him, who is 41 years old, is currently the president of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council.
Mohamed bin Zayed, 61, who took office in May 2022 after the death of his half-brother, is credited, for example, with pushing forward normalization talks with Israel in late 2020.
