A dozen organizations for the defense of Human Rights have warned this Monday that there are already close to a hundred civilians who have been “tortured to death” in the framework of interrogations at the hands of the Burmese military junta since the attack took place. coup in February 2021.
In a joint statement, fourteen organizations have condemned the “terrifying methods of torture” used by the junta against “political prisoners” to “terrorize those dissenting voices against the regime.”
These NGOs estimate that at least 95 civilians have died during this type of interrogation in detention centers and prisons since the military coup.
In this regard, they have urged the international community to take action to help “end the atrocities perpetrated by the junta.” Thus, they have specified that among the civilians who have died after being tortured are senior officials of the National League for Democracy, the party of the former ‘de facto leader’ of the country, Aung San Suu Kyi.
Likewise, the list also includes activists, students, peaceful protesters, youth, politicians and officials, among others. “Using torture to extract information is a common practice for the Army, which also carries out executions,” says the text, which the newspaper ‘The Irrawaddy’ has had access to.
The document establishes that there are indications of torture, which have been collected by first-hand testimonies and point to the use by the military of knives during interrogations.
“We draw attention to the use of torture as a direct result of the impunity that the Army has had for decades. The empty threats made by other governments and international organizations must end,” the NGOs have stated.
Thus, they have asked the UN Security Council to bring these cases of torture before the International Criminal Court to put an end to “ill-treatment and torture, whether physical or psychological, against political prisoners” in Burma.
