Several NGOs, including Save the Children, suspend their activity in Afghanistan

The NGOs Save the Children, the Norwegian Refugee Council and CARE International have informed this Sunday that they are suspending their activity in Afghanistan after the decision of the Taliban to prohibit women from working in non-governmental organizations.

“While we obtain clarity on this announcement, we suspend our programs, demanding that men and women be able to continue equally to provide life-saving assistance in Afghanistan,” they have sentenced in a joint statement.

In this sense, they have warned that without their female staff they cannot effectively reach minors, women and men in need in the country. “Beyond the impact on assistance, this will affect thousands of jobs in the midst of a huge economic crisis,” they have settled.

The Ministry of Economy of Afghanistan’s Taliban authority issued a decree on Saturday ordering all NGOs, whether national or international, to suspend women’s employment contracts until further notice for failing to comply with hijab regulations. .

This measure occurs in the same week that the Ministry of Education prohibited access to university education for women, also alleging non-compliance with the dress code, among other alleged violations of the law.
