Several killed in an attack on a senator’s convoy in southern Nigeria

Sources quoted by the Nigerian newspaper ‘Punch’ have highlighted that several armed people opened fire on the convoy and have stressed that it is “a calculated attempt”. “There were about four policemen in the convoy when they were attacked,” they have pointed out, without the authorities having spoken.

Ubah has not spoken after the event, although a close ally of the senator has denounced an “assassination attempt”. “He has survived, but there are victims. Some policemen in the convoy have died. I just spoke with him. He is fine, but he has told me that there are victims,” ​​he stressed.

For his part, the spokesman for the Anambra Police, Toochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident and stressed that the balance of victims is currently unknown. “There are operations on the ground while operations continue. The situation is being monitored,” he said.

Atiku Abubakar, one of the opposition candidates for the Presidency of Nigeria, has condemned the attack in a message on his account on the social network Twitter and has conveyed his condolences to the families of the victims. “I transfer my sympathies to the distinguished senator. May the souls of the deceased rest in peace,” he pointed out.

He has also advocated “working to ensure that there is security again” in Nigeria, which has suffered a deterioration in security.
