Several policemen died on Sunday in an attack by unidentified armed persons against Senator Ifeanyi Ubrah’s convoy in the town of Enugwu-Ukwu, located in the state of Anambra (south), an event from which the politician would have escaped with his life.
Sources quoted by the Nigerian newspaper ‘Punch’ have highlighted that several armed people opened fire on the convoy and have stressed that it is “a calculated attempt”. “There were about four policemen in the convoy when they were attacked,” they have pointed out, without the authorities having spoken.
Ubah has not spoken after the event, although a close ally of the senator has denounced an “assassination attempt”. “He has survived, but there are victims. Some policemen in the convoy have died. I just spoke with him. He is fine, but he has told me that there are victims,” he stressed.
For his part, the spokesman for the Anambra Police, Toochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident and stressed that the balance of victims is currently unknown. “There are operations on the ground while operations continue. The situation is being monitored,” he said.
Atiku Abubakar, one of the opposition candidates for the Presidency of Nigeria, has condemned the attack in a message on his account on the social network Twitter and has conveyed his condolences to the families of the victims. “I transfer my sympathies to the distinguished senator. May the souls of the deceased rest in peace,” he pointed out.
He has also advocated “working to ensure that there is security again” in Nigeria, which has suffered a deterioration in security. Insecurity, previously centered in the northeast of the country, has spread in recent months to other areas in the north and northwest, setting off alarms over the possible expansion of these terrorist and criminal networks.
On the other hand, the south of the country has been the scene of an uptick in attacks, most of them blamed on the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), an organization founded by Nnamdi Kanu in the United Kingdom in 2014 and declared a terrorist group in 2018. for Abuja, which has established itself as the voice of the Biafran people, among other things thanks to Radio Biafra, which broadcasts from London to the southeast of Nigeria.
