The death toll from torrential rains and floods in Madagascar due to the passage of cyclone ‘Freddy’ has risen to seven, as reported by the Malagasy National Office for Risk and Catastrophe Management.
The agency has highlighted in its official account on the social network Facebook that ‘Freddy’ has left more than 78,000 victims, including around 22,500 “temporarily displaced”, as well as seven affected areas.
Thus, he explained that the Madagascar authorities have established 50 places to temporarily accommodate the displaced and has detailed that more than 9,600 homes have suffered material damage, including more than 1,200 that have been completely destroyed.
On the other hand, he pointed out that 79 schools have suffered damage from the floods, of which six have been “completely destroyed”.
The cyclone made landfall in Madagascar after causing heavy rain and flooding in Mauritius, where authorities were forced to suspend operations at the international airport due to ‘Freddy’ winds.
In January, more than 30 people died in Madagascar due to the storm ‘Cheneso’, which made landfall in the northeast of the island. Likewise, tens of thousands of people were displaced from their homes due to the rains.
