Series of "The Last of Us" on HBO: when does it premiere, how many chapters will it have, what is it about and cast

( ) — “The Last of Us” is the new and ambitious HBO Max series that will premiere on Sunday, January 15. The work, starring Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey, adapts one of the most successful and acclaimed PlayStation video game franchises of the last decade: a story set in a hostile and violent world that has been devastated by a virus that turns people in infected.

The series is called to be HBO’s new big bet and one of the great references of 2023. It was written and produced by Craig Mazin (director of Chernobyl) and Neil Druckmann (co-creator of the first part of the video game “The Last of Us” and creative director of “The Last of Us Part II”). How many episodes does the “The Last of Us” series have and when do they premiere on HBO Max?

“The Last of Us” will have a total of 9 chapters. The first episode will premiere on January 15 in Latin America and the United States at 9 p.m. Eastern time. In Spain it will be released on January 16. There is still no official confirmation for when the rest of the episodes will air, but following the model of other HBO series such as “House of the Dragon”, a weekly episode is expected to premiere every Sunday. In this way, this is how the release schedule would look:

What is “The Last of Us” about?

The official synopsis of the series revealed by HBO notes that “it takes place 20 years after modern civilization has been destroyed. Joel, a born survivor, is hired to smuggle Ellie, a 14-year-old girl, out of a oppressive quarantine zone. What starts as a small job soon turns into a brutal and harrowing journey as both must traverse the US and depend on each other for survival.”

In the video game on which the series is based, the story is told through three titles: “The Last of Us”, “The Last of Us Part II” and “The Last of Us: Left Behind”, the latter being an expansion of the first title. In them, the player empathizes with the protagonists and discovers the world after controlling them for tens of hours throughout their history.

The cast of “The Last of Us” is headed by Pedro Pascal (known for series like “The Mandalorian”, “Narcos” or “Game of Thrones”) in the role of Joel and Bella Ramsey (“Game of Thrones”) in Ellie’s role. Joining them will be Gabriel Luna as Tommy, Anna Torv as Tess, Nico Parker as Sarah, Murray Bartlett as Frank, Nick Offerman as Bill, Melanie Lynskey as Kathleen, Storm Reid as Riley, Merle Dandridge as Marlene, Jeffrey Pierce as Perry, Lamar Johnson as Henry, Keivonn Woodard as Sam, Graham Greene as Marlon, and Elaine Miles as Florence. The actors who played Joel and Ellie in the video game, Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson respectively, will also be in the series.
