Several senior officials of the Government of Israel attacked Defense Minister Yoav Gallant this Friday for his “incorrect” words about France, which had proposed creating a “trilateral” contact group with the United States to try to reduce tensions in the border with Lebanon.
“We do not approve of Gallant’s attacks against France,” several senior Foreign Ministry officials said in a statement that gave rise to an unusual dispute between the parties. “Despite the differences between France and Israel, these comments against France are inappropriate,” they said.
Previously, Gallant has refused to be part of this contact group to reduce tensions on the country’s northern border and has pointed out that “while Israel tries to defend its people by waging a just war, France adopts hostile policies against the country.”
“By doing this, France ignores the atrocities committed by Hamas against Israeli children, women and men,” he clarified, while diplomats have acknowledged that French authorities have played an “active role” in defending Israel from attack carried out in April by Iran.
Thus, they have pointed out that since the beginning of the war “France has been denouncing and sanctioning Hamas, in addition to adopting an aggressive line regarding Iran and its missile and drone program,” according to the newspaper ‘The Times of Israel’.
In this sense, they have defended that the French authorities are “fighting fervently to confront anti-Semitism and protect Jews.” “We will continue to fight to protect Israel’s interests on the border with all relevant partners,” they stated.
Israel and Hezbollah – backed by Iran and with important political weight in Lebanon – have maintained a series of clashes since October 8, following the attacks carried out on October 7 by the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) against territory Israeli attack, which left some 1,200 dead and nearly 240 kidnapped.
Tensions have been rising in recent weeks and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned last week that the Israeli Army “is prepared for very powerful action” on the border with Lebanon. In response, Hezbollah’s number two, Naim Qassem, warned on Monday that an expansion of the conflict would lead to “devastation and destruction” in Israel.
