BILBAO, June 3 () –
The engineering and technology group Sener has participated in the expansion of Line 1 of the Panama City Metro, as responsible for the design of the civil works carried out for the consortium formed by the construction companies OHLA and Mota-Engil.
Line 1 structures Panama City in a north-south direction, from the Albrook area to San Isidro, it has 14 stations, 6 elevated and 8 underground, and extends over 16 kilometers, with a travel time of 26 minutes between their extremes. Between 240,000 and 280,000 people use its services every day.
With the new extension, the line extends 2.4 km on the north side towards the Villa Zaita area, and adds a new station with this name. The new section is elevated along its entire length and is built on prestressed concrete beams up to 30 meters long.
The station is also elevated, and is located above Transístmica Avenue, whose section is expanded from two to three lanes in each direction. The station is complemented by an intermodal building, which consists of a bus interchange with 16 docks, and two floors of parking with 600 spaces. The action also includes the redevelopment of the surroundings of the route and the station, in a total area of close to 13 hectares.
The investment associated with the project exceeds 200 million euros, and it is estimated that it will increase traffic on the line by around 30,000 passengers per day.
Sener has developed the “conceptual, basic and detailed” engineering of the civil works of the action, which includes the design of the layout, the viaduct, the station, the intermodal building, the pedestrian accesses, the expansion of Transísmica Avenue and the urbanization, as well as the management of interfaces with railway systems.
The extension was recently inaugurated by the President of the Republic, Laurentino Cortizo, and the general director of the Panama Metro, Héctor Ortega.
FIRST PHASE
Basque engineering already participated in the project of the first phase of line 1, which was put into service in 2014, for which it developed the basic and detailed design, as well as the technical assistance on site, of the tunnel section, the underground stations and the workshops and garages for the consortium in charge of its construction, formed by FCC and Odebrecht.
Currently, Sener participates in other “emblematic” projects in the country, such as the fourth bridge over the Panama Canal and line 3 of the Metro, actions that will improve the connection between Panama Oeste and Panama City, “decongesting the traffic that exists in these areas, improving the quality of life of more than a million people.
The head of Sener in Panama, Pelayo Smith, has expressed his satisfaction for “continuing to help promote a more sustainable mobility model” in Panama City, “through the design of a technically complex project like this one.”
“This expansion will allow increasing the capacity of the network and providing service to new areas, also promoting intermodality, and ultimately allowing a greater volume of citizens to access more efficient mobility alternatives,” he concluded.
