The Governments of Senegal and Mauritania have taken a step towards the exploitation of common gas by announcing this Wednesday the opening of the first well of the ‘Grand Tortue/Ahmeyim’ (GTA) project, of which an initial production of 2.5 million is estimated. tons of liquefied natural gas per year.
The Ministries of Energy of both countries have made the announcement through a joint statement published on social networks in which they have celebrated the opening of the first well as a “milestone” towards the “success” of the GTA project and that “consolidates the partnership exemplary” and the “cooperation” that will benefit the economy of the two nations.
The project, located on the maritime border between Mauritania and Senegal, will be developed by a consortium made up of the Mauritanian Hydrocarbons Company, Petrosen – the Senegalese Petroleum Company -, the British company BP and the American oil company Kosmos Energy.
Its initial production is estimated at 2.5 million tons of liquefied natural gas per year, although it is expected to increase to 10 million in the coming years, said the Mauritanian Minister of Energy, Mohamed Ould Khaled, quoted by the news agency. state AMI.
“This exemplary partnership with Senegal demonstrates the ability of our two countries to achieve ambitious and sustainable goals together. The future of energy in our region looks bright,” said the minister.
