Security forces kill hundreds of suspected terrorists in southern Burkina Faso

Burkina Faso security forces have killed nearly a hundred suspected terrorists in the framework of an operation in the town of Bittou, located in the south of the country, amid a surge in activities against jihadist groups operating in the country.

Security sources quoted by the Burkinabe state news agency, AIB, have indicated that the operation has been carried out in the Sawenga forest and have added that it has had the support of Air Force planes.

Likewise, the Army and “volunteers” recruited by the authorities to reinforce anti-terrorist operations have carried out an attack against a terrorist base in the Gibga forest, located in this same area of ​​the African country, without any information on victims for now. .

The operations have taken place after a gendarme and ten terrorists died on Monday in an attack against a checkpoint in the surroundings of the Burkinabe city of Dori (north). In addition, security sources indicated that the Army had “crushing defeats” of the terrorists in several regions, leaving “several dozen neutralized terrorists.”

Burkina Faso has registered a sharp increase in jihadist attacks in recent years, the work of both Al Qaeda and Islamic State affiliates in the region, which led the military junta headed by Ibrahim Traoré to decree a mobilization in April general. Abuses by the security forces against the population have helped these groups in their recruitment efforts.
