() — The search for an 18-year-old Louisiana high school graduate who fell overboard from a boat in the Bahamas this week has been called off, the US Coast Guard said Friday, citing the US military.
Cameron Robbins was on a graduating senior year trip from Baton Rouge’s University High Lab School when he fell from the boat Wednesday night, a Louisiana State University spokeswoman told .
The Royal Bahamas Defense Force, which had been searching for him, told the US Coast Guard on Friday that it was suspending active search efforts and no further Coast Guard assistance was needed, the US agency said.
The US Coast Guard had assisted in the search from Wednesday through Friday night.
“We offer our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Cameron Robbins,” the Coast Guard stated.
Before the suspension of the search, Justin Morgan, his high school baseball coach, described Robbins as a “fierce competitor,” explaining that the teen was both a third baseman and a pitcher on the team.
“Cameron is a guy who is really loved by his teammates, coaches, teachers and classmates,” Morgan told . “He is a fierce competitor on the baseball field. He is a hard worker both on and off the field.”
“Our thoughts and prayers have been and will continue to be with the Robbins family during this time,” he added.
The institute depends on the Faculty of Human Sciences and Education of the university. Robbins attended that school for all 13 years of his education, principal Kevin George told affiliate WBRZ.
“He’s a special kid who’s been here his entire educational career. He’s an athlete, great kid, big smile, great hair. One of those guys you’re proud of,” George said.
“The boys asked us if they could have a prayer circle. We obviously agreed. We really appreciate your leadership in these difficult times,” he added.
