Rare ha announced that since its launch in 2018, the pirate adventure Sea of Thieves has managed to register more than 40 million players among Xbox One, Xbox Series, Steam and Windows customers. The title reaches this notable figure just two weeks before it begins to sail the waters of PlayStation 5, where it will arrive on April 30. A few days ago the game successfully held a closed beta on the Sony console.

Sea of Thieves began its journey in March 2018 with 2 million players, which by July of that same year had already become 5 million. In January 2020, Sea of Thieves became the most successful new Xbox intellectual property of the last generation by surpassing 10 million users. In a few months this number rose to 15 million, while in August 2021 and thanks to the launch of the A Pirate's Life content, Sea of Thieves managed to register the record number of 4.8 million monthly users.

The last time Rare shared the number of filibusters who have passed through Sea of Thieves was in October 2021, when it was 25 million. Three years later, the pirate experience has continued to gain followers, reaching 40 million. Now the title is preparing to continue adding followers with the launch on PlayStation 5. When Sea of Thieves is available on the Sony console, cross-play will allow PlayStation, Xbox and Steam users to collaborate or fight among themselves in the seas of the Caribbean .

Sea of Thieves is also preparing to welcome season 12, which will begin on April 30, coinciding with the arrival of the PS5 version. However, before this happens Rare will celebrate 40 million players with a Gold & Glory Weekend. This means that players who are still leveling up in Season 11 will get an increase in Renown, Gold, and Reputation.
