Sea of Stars players can now download the Dawn of Equinox update, which features a local cooperative mode for three users on all platforms on which the title is available. On PS5 and Steam, cooperative can be online thanks to Share Play and Play Together, respectively. There are also changes to combat with the introduction of the Sticky Combo Points and Mystery Locks systems.

Sabotage Studio explains that the integration of a local cooperative mode in Sea of Stars was quite laborious due to the existence of many interactive objects, cinematics, camera focuses, puzzles, menus and interactions with NPCs among other elements, which would break if more than One player completely controls the game world. To not spoil anything, the development team manually implemented each case one by one until creating a three-player mode. Anyone who wants to convert this mode online using Share Play should note that it requires a PS Plus subscription.

In Sea of Stars cooperative mode, combat begins when any character touches an enemy or projectile. In this mode it does not matter who controls which character in the common area, as players randomly take turns choosing the next action of the character of their choice. When there is an action, all players can act to make a team block or hit. Another feature of this mode is that the three players have total freedom and can do everything, including running, swimming, climbing, changing equipment, talking to an NPC… as if they were playing alone.

Changes to combat include the arrival of Sticky Combo Points and Mystery Locks. The Sticky Combo Points system allows you to maintain combo points after combat to make combos more useful. “This change primarily addresses the feeling that there wasn’t enough movement variety in the game,” says Sabotage Studio. Regarding Mystery Locks, it introduces a new gameplay loop with which to reveal how to break enemy spells when they first appear. The damage type will now not be displayed for each lock, but must be discovered with attacks.

The bubble brings back missing players.

“Combined with Sticky Combo Points and difficulty presets, Mystery Locks give us the definitive edition of the Sea of Stars combat system,” says the development team. The future of Sea of Stars lies in the additional Throes of the Watchmaker content that will be available at no additional cost during spring 2025.
