The general commander of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), Mazlum Abdi, has accused this Sunday the president of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, of ordering his failed assassination attempt to use his death as an electoral incentive for the presidential elections of 14 of May.
“He tries to win the elections at the expense of Kurdish blood, using the Kurds as targets and as a card in the electoral campaign,” the commander denounced in a video published by the Kurdish news agency Rudaw.
Abdi survived last Friday an attack with a drone in the city of Sulemania, in Iraqi Kurdistan, for which both the group and the Iraqi Presidency — and even US official sources on condition of anonymity — have blamed Turkey. , which has not ruled on the matter.
The SDF are allies of the US Army in its fight against the Islamic State in Syria but Turkey claims that they are the “Syrian wing” of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, an armed group considered by Ankara to be a terrorist organization.
In relation to his alliance with the US, Abdi points out that “Turkey is not happy either with our fight against the Islamic State or with relations with its allies in Kurdistan, but it is not achieving its objective of damaging this relationship,” he indicated.
The Turkish president is a relative favorite to win the May elections but analysts consider that his figure has weakened in recent months, which could present an opportunity for the great rival candidate Kemal Kiliçdaroglu, candidate of the National Alliance that brings together six opposition parties against the president.
