German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has refused to submit to a vote of no confidence in the Bundestag, a measure that would initiate a possible process of calling early elections, he explained today in the traditional summer interview on public television channel ZDF.
Scholz stressed that the government has the parliamentary majority necessary to carry out the tasks at hand. “It is an idea of the opposition to say this every three weeks,” he said.
In any case, he acknowledged that forming governments will be difficult in the near future. “If I may share my concerns with you: I fear that, whatever happens in the coming years, we will have constellations in Germany in which it will be very difficult to form a government for many years to come,” he said. This situation will occur both at the federal level and at the regional governments.
“That’s why it’s important that we find a style together in which the fact that parties that may not have agreed on things at the beginning can lead to achievements,” said Scholz, who stressed that the “traffic light” coalition of Social Democrats, Greens and Liberals that he heads has achieved a lot in this regard.
