MADRID Jan. 8 () –
The chancellor of Germany, Olaf Scholz, has warned that the national borders of any country cannot be changed “by force” following the warnings launched by the president-elect of the United States, Donald Trump, about Greenland, which would have generated “certain incomprehension” in Berlin and its European partners.
“We Europeans must remain united,” claimed the head of the German Government, appealing to a principle of inviolability of borders that, according to him, is key to the peaceful maintenance of international order and “applies to all countries.”
At a press conference on Tuesday, Trump raised the possibility of using military or economic means of pressure to gain control of the Panama Canal or Greenland, a territory that currently belongs to Denmark. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has already warned that the island “is not for sale.”
The magnate’s allusions have been echoed in several European countries, as well as in the European Union. “The sovereignty of a State has to be respected and is a diplomatic value and a key principle with which we work in all cases,” EU Foreign Affairs spokesperson Anitta Hipper said at a press conference in Brussels.
