BERLIN, 16 March. (DPA/EP) –

The German Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, has announced this Thursday a new arms aid package for Ukraine in the midst of the invasion of Russia and has asked the German population for “confidence” in the face of the changes that have occurred as a result of the war and the climate crisis .

During a speech before Parliament, Scholz pointed out that the new assistance will be delivered in collaboration with other European Union states and stressed that this will make it possible to guarantee that Ukraine receives weapons and equipment to deal with Russian troops and “defend itself”.

This has been expressed before the Bundestag ahead of the EU summit scheduled for next week. “It is especially important to quickly provide Ukraine with the necessary ammunition,” Scholz said.

“In the European Council we will decide further measures together with our EU partners to achieve even better and continuous supply,” he added.

The heads of state and government of the EU member countries are expected to address issues such as competitiveness and energy, but also the invasion of Ukraine in Brussels next week.

“Now it is not a matter of lamenting with nostalgia for the past time in which so many things were supposedly better,” he stated before stating that “what matters now is that we get going together and work to make a new positive era possible. “, both for Germany and for Europe.

Scholz has defended in this sense that Germany has achieved independence from Russian gas, oil and coal in just eight months. “Nobody had to be cold. There was no economic collapse or forced closure of industrial plants,” he stressed.

This shows that “when the time comes, we can change, accelerate and transform”, he assured, while urging “trust” in this experience.
