Saudi Arabia and Syria have confirmed in a joint statement that they have begun the procedures to resume consular services in both countries, as well as flights between them, in an approach to Damascus to rebuild their relations with other countries in the region.
Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal al Mikdad is visiting Riyadh and has met his Saudi counterpart Faisal bin Farhan al Saud.
“The two sides discussed the efforts made to reach a political solution to the crisis in Syria that preserves the unity, security, stability, Arab identity and territorial integrity of Syria in a way that achieves the good of the Syrian people,” the statement read.
Likewise, they have celebrated the recovery of bilateral relations and have highlighted the importance of improving security and “fighting terrorism in all their organizations”.
The Council for the Cooperation of the Arab States of the Gulf (CCG) will hold a meeting this Friday precisely to address ties with Syria, within the framework of a thawing of the almost total isolation in the region to which Damascus was subjected after the outbreak of the war in 2011.
In addition, the Arab League plans to hold a summit in May to address the possible re-entry of Syria into the organization and the possibility of Syrian President Bashar al Assad participating in the meeting is being considered, which would mean his return to the regional scene. .
