Sanna Marin resigns as leader of the Social Democratic Party but will continue as a deputy

The Prime Minister of Finland, sanna marinhas announced this Wednesday that he will resign as leader of the social democratic party (SDP) after the defeat in the elections parliamentarians on Sunday, in which the formation remained in third place behind of conservatives and extreme rightists.

“Now is the time to join ranks again and resign as leader,” said Marin, who has called on his colleagues to choose another person as head of the congress in September. As a more immediate measure, he will disassociate himself from the possible negotiations to form a government, the Yle chain reports.

Marin will continue as deputy, but she does not see herself as a minister in case her party could be part of a future coalition. “The SDP is ready to govern,” said Marin, who has offered the party’s “collaboration” in the upcoming negotiations. “We have already taken responsibility many times in Finnish history,” she added.

The SDP obtained 19.9 percent of the votes in Sunday’s elections, and although it improved its results, it fell behind the National Coalition and the Finns Party, so there will foreseeably be a political turn in the Nordic country
