The President of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, met in Berlin with his German and Portuguese counterparts, Olaf Scholz and António Costa, in a meeting in which they underlined the importance of diversify energy supply to ensure your safety. The three leaders discussed the need to speed up the construction of energy interconnectors, according to a joint statement issued after the trilateral meeting in the German capital.
Although the press previously knew that none of the leaders would make a statement after the meeting, Sánchez replied that the meeting had gone “very well” when asked by the Spanish media upon entering the dinner of leaders of the European Socialist Party (PSE).
No mention of MidCat
The MidCat trans-Pyrenean gas pipeline, considered a key project by the three leaderswas one of the central issues to be discussed in this conversation on the future of energy supply in the continent, although the final document of the meeting does not mention it explicitly. This, however, does refer to “gas corridors suitable for transporting green hydrogen”.
The Midcat project, which would link the Iberian Peninsula with Northern Europe to transport gas from the Maghreb, faces the reluctance of the French presidentEmmanuel Macron, who argues that It’s not profitable and that it is necessary to bet on green energies. However, both Scholz and Sánchez have repeatedly defended the pipeline for its strategic importance and its future ability to transport green hydrogen.
The three leaders, who are expected to intend to discuss the issue at the next European Council in Brussels, on October 20 and 21, they have agreed to carry out a “joint monitoring” of this issue, the statement stressed. Sánchez, Scholz and Costa also agree on the need to provide “common and urgent” European responses to the challenges linked to high energy prices.
All three point to the independence from fossil fuels It will make it possible to combat climate change, speed up the energy transition towards decarbonisation and guarantee the security of the European Union. In this sense, they have also pointed out the importance of the European Green Deal, the roadmap in the Union towards climate neutrality in 2050.
The three leaders also addressed Russia’s “war of aggression” against Ukraine, an issue that will also be the focus of the next European Council meeting, and reaffirmed their “unwavering support” for kyiv “for as long as necessary.”
Sánchez and Costa went to Berlin on the occasion of the Congress of the European Socialist Partyin which 33 European parties of the socialist and social democratic family meet and that this Friday elected its new president, the former Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Löfven.
