Sánchez defends that there are "many hours" until Thursday to achieve approval of the tax reform

He believes that the agreements reached regarding the tax on energy companies with ERC and Junts are “compatible” and “can be combined”

Nov. 19 () –

The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, has assured that until Thursday there are “many hours” left to be able to reach agreements in Congress with the different parliamentary groups and move forward with the tax reform.

In a press conference from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where he is currently participating in the G20 Summit, Sánchez defended that if there is a Government that can manage complexity “it is this one”, in reference to the vote that will take place. on Thursday in the Lower House to advance the bill that includes a new global minimum tax of 15% on multinational companies.

“I consider that the weakness is not being able to articulate parliamentary majorities and this Government articulates parliamentary majorities,” he expressed.

Likewise, regarding the controversy over the approval of the tax on energy companies, the president has assured that the agreements reached with the different parties “can be combined”, since the Government defends two things that are “perfectly coherent and compatible”.

On the one hand, he has referred to the need for energy companies to have a specific tax, while at the same time the productive fabric in Spain can be decarbonized. “That is what the government is defending with the agreements we have reached with each other,” he said.

His statements refer to the controversy that has arisen in recent hours over the negotiations both with PNV and Junts on the one hand, and with ERC, EH Bildu and BNG on the other, to maintain or not the tax on energy companies.

Yesterday the Executive managed to gain support in the Commission after the Government’s agreement with ERC, Bildu and BNG, which decided to support the bill in exchange for extending the energy tax via decree. However, later, the Treasury clarified “that it maintains its agreement with Junts to not tax energy companies that maintain their effective investment commitment for decarbonization.”

Given the confusion generated around the energy tax, this Tuesday the spokespersons for the different parliamentary groups, partners of the Government, have launched their warnings ahead of Thursday’s vote.

Finally, Sánchez has affirmed that the Government is going to fulfill its duty, which is to present the General State Budgets (PGE) for 2025 with the aim of facing immediate and medium- and long-term challenges with public accounts.
