San Diego welcomes first panda pair to US in 21 years

Yun Chuan and Xin Bao, the first pandas to have entered the United States in 21 years, arrived safely in the city of San Diego, California, according to the Voice of America the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance.

“They will spend the next few weeks acclimating to their new home in a private habitat at the San Diego Zoo and will not be visible to the public during this time,” the Alliance said.

Xin Bao, a female giant panda born on July 23, 2020, and Yun Chuan, a male of the same species, born on July 28, 2019, will begin a 10-year residency that continues nearly three decades of cooperation and conservation diplomacy between China and the United States.

The collaboration between the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance and the China Wildlife Conservation Association aims to improve the health and resilience of giant pandas in some of the smallest, most isolated populations vulnerable to extinction and the loss of genetic diversity, according to the Californian institution.

In preparation for transporting the pandas and ensuring their safe arrival at the San Diego Zoo, the Chinese side conducted health screenings and assessments and sent experts to provide technical guidance and inspection at the San Diego Zoo, the center said in its announcement.

Specifically, China sent five experienced keepers, veterinarians and other experts to accompany the giant pandas, and provisions such as steamed food, bamboo shoots, carrots, water and medicine were prepared to meet their needs during the journey.

In this regard, the sources explained that Xin Bao and Yun Chuan “are being closely monitored by expert teams in wildlife health and care who will determine when the couple will be ready to meet the public.”

According to that statement, the San Diego Zoo, one of the most prestigious in the country, will share more information about the public appearance of the giant pandas in the coming weeks.
