Samuel L. Jackson looks at the Academy Awards with a new perspective.
Jackson, 75, didn’t mince words when sharing his thoughts on the coveted gong, saying that the Oscar nominations don’t mean much to him.
“We’ve been in the business long enough to know that when people say, ‘It’s an honor to be nominated.’ No, it’s not,” Jackson said. Associated Press in a joint interview with her “The Piano Lesson” co-star Michael Potts.
“It’s an honor to win,” the “Pulp Fiction” actor said, adding that most people eventually forget Oscar-nominated performances.
“You get nominated and people say, ‘Yeah, I remember that.’ Or most people forget,” he joked.
The “Unbreakable” actor was nominated in the Best Supporting Actor category at the 1995 Oscars for his role as Jules Winnfield in Quentin Tarantino’s “Pulp Fiction.”
He ultimately lost to Martin Landau for his role as Ed Wood in the 1994 film of the same name.
Jackson believed he would have won an Oscar for his role in Joel Schumacher’s “A Time To Kill” if his memorable scenes had not been cut from the final version.
“The things that were taken from me kept me from getting an Oscar,” Jackson told the old man. Vulture in 2023. “Really, motherfuckers? Did you just take that sh*t away from me?
“My first day working on that movie, I gave a speech in a room with an actor and the whole damn set was crying when I finished. I was like, ‘Okay. I’m on the right page.’ That shit isn’t in the movie! And I know why it’s not. Because it wasn’t my movie and they weren’t trying to make me a star.”
After years without the coveted award, Jackson finally received the Honorary Academy Award in 2021 and was recognized as a “cultural icon” by the Academy.
“It’s usually a contest where you don’t volunteer,” he said of awards ceremonies. “I didn’t go in there so I could flex. ‘Let me do my scene, so you can remember who I was.’”
“You get nominated and people say, ‘What’s that movie you’re nominated for?’ What is that thing called? And when it’s over, people have a hard time remembering who won,” added the “Snakes on a Plane” actor.
The “Star Wars” actor also told Vulture that his 2021 Oscar “didn’t feel honorary” and instead “just felt like I was getting an Oscar.”
“I earned it. “I worked for it,” he told the outlet. “I can name four other cases where I could have won or should have won or should have been nominated, but that’s fine with me. It’s mine. I have it. “My name is on it.”
