Samsung has celebrated the first edition of its ‘Innovation Campus Summit’ event. AI for a Better World’, where experts in Artificial Intelligence (AI) have discussed how to use this technology to improve society, in addition to raising awareness various projects in which AI positively impacts people, as is the case of the AISKILLSLAB AI skills laboratory.
During the event, held at the El Beatriz Auditorium in Madrid and organized by the training platform Samsung Innovation Campushave been cited experts in different disruptive technologies to discuss the scope of AI and its ability to improve the lives of users at both the personal and professional levels. health, as well as sustainability, accessibility and education.
In this sense, the event has had the participation of the Secretary General for Vocational Training of the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training, Clara Sand, who has stressed the importance of this technology framed in “the fourth industrial revolution”, and has advocated for “working together” so that AI is “at the service of society” and serves to “improve the world.”
Along these lines, the Iberia CMO & Head of Direct to Consumer at Samsung Electronics Iberia, Alfonso Fernández Iglesias, opened the day by outlining some of the technological challenges that stand out most today and how AI can help to address them.
Thus, the technology executive has pointed out that, according to the pan-European study ‘Intelligent Living: How AI is Enhancing Everyday Experiences’, the 67 percent of respondents want more advice and suggestions on how to improve the future, “rather than warnings about what should scare them.” Similarly, 63 percent of users surveyed prefer to “learn more about responsible uses of AI.”
It is from this point of view that the colloquium organized by Samsung arises, in which they have participated experts in various sectors throughout several round tablesto publicize specific projects in which AI positively impacts people’s lives.
AI IN THE EDUCATION SECTOR
One of the speakers was the director of the Singular Center for Research in Intelligent Technologies of the University of Santiago de Compostela (CiTIUS), Senén Barro, who put the Focus on education and the need to update a model that “is not designed for this new reality” nor for the reality that “will soon arrive.”
“We are installed in the mechanics of memorization-reproduction, and there the machines win by a landslide,” Barro has sentenced. In this regard, the director of the National Institute of Educational Technologies and Teacher Training (INTEF), Julio Albalad Gimeno, has presented the Guide on the use of artificial intelligence in the educational field, a publication that aims to serve as a fundamental resource for the educational community.
As Albalad Gimeno explained, this guide is based on pillars that promote Affective and ethical integration of AI and related technologies in non-university educational stages.
Following this line, the former general director of Innovation, Research and Digital Culture of the Generalitat de Catalunya, Mar Camacho, has valued the ‘AISKILLSLAB’ project, a laboratory of advanced AI skills, with which nearly 300 teachers have already been trained of Primary, Secondary and Vocational Training in the use of AI.
HOW AI CAN HELP IN VARIOUS SECTORS
The event also discussed how technology and AI can provide assistance to people with disabilities. To this end, the director of Accessibility and Innovation of the ONCE Foundation and director of AccessibleEU, Jesús Hernández-Galán, has highlighted the advantages offered by the AccessRobots projectwhich is based on a robot capable of assisting people with sensory, physical and cognitive disabilities in complex environments.
For example, this robot is capable of assist users who need it in transport infrastructuressuch as modal interchanges, airports or train stations, in which hospitals or even in shopping malls.
For its part, Samsung has highlighted the various initiatives it carries out through its program Technology with Purpose. As the Head of Brand Strategy & Innovation at Samsung Electronics, Miguel Ángel Ruiz, has pointed out, this program has already been running for 12 years, More than 25 million euros invested and 35 projects which, he said, have benefited “more than half a million people in Spain.”
These technological projects include initiatives such as: Impulsewhich helps people with speech difficulties, or Unfearwhich eliminates noise for people with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
In relation to the use of technology in the health sectorthe head of innovation at the Ramón y Cajal Institute for Health Research (IRYCIS), Diego Velasco, has highlighted the importance of using support programs for innovative initiatives, in order to help the development of new technologies.
In this context, he announced the ‘IRYCIS MISSION 2030’ programwhich aims to promote new developments originating from IRYCIS, so that by 2030 it will be possible to implement in clinical use “four new therapies and three medical devices, adjusting deadlines to the maximum due to the intensive use of artificial intelligence.”
In addition to all this, the possibilities offered by AI and disruptive technologies are also extend to the tourism sector. As shared by the researcher from the Polytechnic University of Valencia, José María Cecilia, they stand out projects like CHAN-TWINwhich enables the development of sustainable tourism models in smart natural spaces, through sensors that allow the calculation of useful tourism indicators, allowing useful management of the space.
BOOK ‘AI FOR A BETTER WORLD’
In addition to the various colloquia, Samsung and the Polytechnic University of Valencia have presented the book ‘AI for a Better World’a compilation of all the final projects in the successive AI courses taught under the framework of Samsung Innovation Campus, since 2020.
With all this, this first edition of the Samsung event aims to highlight the company’s objective of putting AI at the service of society as a whole in issues that affect people in their daily lives. Thus, this meeting aims to become “a regular appointment” For all those companies and organizations that, like Samsung, collaborate in building a better future supported by technology.
