According to a study by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, a scientific society in the United Kingdom, every time a garment is washed, up to 700,000 microscopic fibers reach the oceans, are swallowed by marine life and enter the food chain, potentially end up on our plates.
On the other hand, the study Engineering Out Fashion Waste highlights that 35% of the microplastics released into the oceans around the world come from synthetic textiles. That is why Samsung presented a filter that prevents these microplastics from being reduced by up to 98.9%, in addition to creating a washing machine that minimizes energy and water consumption.
The Less Microfiber filter is made from recycled plastics, to help embed sustainability at every stage of its life cycle, and was designed to be durable and easy to maintain.
The filter blades capture microplastics with a 65-70 micrometer wide mesh, then redirect and compress these microplastics to the side, meaning the filter only needs to be cleaned about once a month. The filter will be on sale in the third quarter of 2023.
This filter was a design effort by the South Korean brand and Patagonia. According to Jason Kim, president of Samsung Electronics, the idea of this type of product is to create awareness around the environment and avoid continuing to use products that impact more.
In addition, during the presentation, Kim highlighted one of the functions of Smart Things, which allows monitoring the amount of water, energy and impact that smart home products can have.
To make it easier for consumers to enjoy those experiences, Samsung announced that it will integrate Wi-Fi support into all new Bespoke home appliances and make connectivity a standard across all of the brand’s home appliance lines in the coming years.
More products “Made in Mexico”
Samsung has two large plants in Mexico, one located in Tijuana and one more in Querétaro.
In the case of the factory in the north of the country, the company focuses on producing televisions, while in Querétaro they have a production line for refrigerators and washing machines. But, from the fourth quarter of 2023, Samsung will also have production of electric stoves.
According to the brand, this production will initially serve the United States market and Tijuana will be the plant in charge of opening this new production, which will generate jobs in the area, although the details on how many new jobs there will be are still unclear. .
