BRUSSELS Dec. 5 () –
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte told Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in a phone call this Thursday that the priority of the Atlantic Alliance at this time is to urgently provide more military aid to Ukraine.
“Our priority is more support for Ukraine. More air defense, more ammunition and faster,” the NATO leader said in a message on social networks. The call with Zelensky thus follows this week’s contacts with the meeting of allied foreign ministers in which the Ukrainian minister, Andri Sibiga, participated to explain the situation on the ground and demand the invitation to join the alliance.
In this way, Rutte has reaffirmed the support of NATO members for kyiv, after this week they agreed that it is time to strengthen Ukraine so that “one day it can enter into talks with Russia to end the conflict.”
For his part, Zelensky has stressed the importance of the uninterrupted supply of 155-millimeter projectiles, weapons and military equipment, while insisting that NATO issue an invitation to Ukraine to process its accession, a matter mentioned by the Ukrainian president’s office. but avoids Rutte in his message.
In any case, both have pointed out the importance of intensifying cooperation and delivering more air defense systems and additional reinforcements in the face of the wave of Russian bombings against critical infrastructure.
This contact comes at a time when the idea is beginning to spread at NATO headquarters that kyiv could sit down to negotiate a cessation of hostilities with Russia, every time the Ukrainian president speaks of 2025 as the year to achieve peace.
