Russian Parliament passes law to punish those who advocate not having children

MADRID 12 Nov. () –

The State Duma of Russia, the Lower House of Parliament, approved this Tuesday a bill that punishes messages in which propaganda against having children can be made, a proposal that is in line with the ultra-conservative measures promoted in recent years. by the ruling party loyal to the president, Vladimir Putin.

The law, promoted by the presidents of the Duma and the Federation Council, penalizes the dissemination of these messages on all types of platforms, with fines that can amount to 400,000 rubles (more than 3,800 euros), in the case of individuals physical, and five million euros (about 48,000 euros), in the legal case, if minors are exposed. For foreign citizens, the threat of deportation and a 15-day administrative arrest is added to the common fines.

The president of the Duma, Viacheslav Volodin, has clarified that the promotion of “ideology” will be punished, but that these measures will not penalize “a woman’s decision to refuse to have children”, an argument similar to the one that the Government already used to justify the law that pursues LGTBI propaganda.

Russia seeks to “suppress any destructive content that could influence an individual’s decision to have children,” Volodin explained in statements to the media, according to the Interfax news agency.
