Russia will stop providing service at the only border post between Armenia and Iran from 2025

Russian and Armenian guards will work together on the rest of the border

Oct. 9 () –

Russian security forces will stop serving at the only border checkpoint between Armenia and Iran from January 1, 2025, although they will continue to work jointly with Armenian guards on the rest of the border, where the presence of both sides dates back to 1991, when Yerevan achieved its independence following the formal dissolution of the Soviet Union.

“Service at the border checkpoint on the state border between Armenia and Iran will be carried out entirely by the Border Guard forces of the Armenian National Security Service,” Armenian spokesperson Nazeli Baghdasaryan said in a statement. his Facebook social network account, after an agreement ratified this Tuesday in Moscow during a meeting between the Armenian Prime Minister, Nikol Pashinián, and the Russian President, Vladimir Putin.

In this sense, he explained that both parties will participate in the protection of the Armenian borders with Iran and Turkey, which is why Pashinián has thanked Putin for the service of the Russian border guards since the country’s independence.

Representatives of the FSB Border Directorate, together with border troops of the Armenian National Security Service, also monitor the country’s borders with Turkey and Iran on the basis of a 1992 agreement.
