Russia on Tuesday welcomed the formal request by Algeria to join the BRICS, an economic-commercial organization of which Moscow is a part and which is also made up of Brazil, India, China and South Africa.
“We welcome our friends, partners and like-minded parties to join in the work within formats such as BRICS and SCO (Shanghai Cooperation Organization), as well as other formats, in which we are actively working,” he said. explained the Russian Deputy Foreign Minister, Mijail Bogdanov, as reported by the TASS news agency.
Subsequently, the Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, has indicated that the member states of the organization “have the intention of negotiating the criteria and principles of the possible expansion of the association shortly”.
“Bearing in mind that we have already received official requests, we hope, of course, that the negotiations of the criteria and principles will not take long. We must first understand how this association will develop in its potential expansion of members,” he said, adding that he did not it is only Algeria, but other countries such as Iran or Argentina, becoming a dozen candidates.
Already in August, the Algerian president, Abdelmayid Tebune, affirmed that the country complied “to a great extent” with the conditions to join the organization and recognized Algiers’ interest in the group’s economic and political influence.
