The Russian Government has warned that it would take responsibility for any aggression against Belarus, as well as the “serious consequences” it would have for regional security, after Lithuania suggested it could be a legitimate target for Ukraine if Moscow deployed military objectives there. .
The Russian Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Maria Zakharova, recalled that based on the “new military doctrine” of the State of the Union – an alliance of Moscow and Minsk -, any aggression against Belarus would be considered an “intrusion” in Russian territory with “all the serious consequences” that entails.
Zajarova recalled that the presence of Russian troops and nuclear weapons in Belarus is aimed at defending the western borders of both the Union State and the Collective Security Treaty Organization, a sort of NATO made up of former Soviet republics.
A few days ago, during a meeting in Prague of NATO foreign affairs chiefs, the head of Lithuanian diplomacy, Gabrielius Landsbergis, suggested that Ukraine should be able to attack Belarusian territory if there was the presence of Russian military objectives there.
